Willam Yate sailed from England for NZ in 1827, employed by the Church Missionary Society to study the native langage and teach in mission schools. He worked to translate the Bible into Maori, prepared mission booklets and visited Tonga. After more than six years in NZ he returned to England, compiling his "Account." on the voyage. This enabled his book to be published in 1835 (and reprinted that year) making it an early contemporary account of NZ, its people, their customs and the work of the CMS. Thus, it is an enlightening and appealing account of NZ at that time. This is a photolithoghraphic, unabridged fascimile of the second edition, with an introduction by historial Judith Binney, who explains the reasons why Yeat subsequently fell from favour with the CMS. An extended, additional index was prepared by Michael Hewson and the book was produced to a high quality by the Irish University Press. Original book 320 pages including unpaginated index, preliminaries, including introduction, 21pages, new index eight pages, 10 plates, one in colour showing NZ flags, foldout map. Dark green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. DJ is VG with chips and a few short tears top edge, Seller Inventory # 003192
