In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small, blue, wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, the Reverend W. Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945. He continued to create new adventures and characters until 1972 when he retired from writing. Reverend W Awdry died in 1997 at age 85.
PreSchool-Grade 4-This book, with its big, full-color pictures and easy-to-understand text, is a good introduction. Instead of focusing on individual species, dinosaurs are grouped by their characteristics. Double-page spreads cover such topics as what dinosaurs ate, how they defended themselves, their skeletons, and how babies were raised. Most of the information is up-to-date, if not exactly cutting edge. Some fairly recently discovered dinosaurs like the Seismosaurus and Maiasaura are included, as are celebrities like Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor. Large, colorful spreads show dinosaurs eating plants, attacking one another, and fossilized in museums. In a picture of a dig, a cutaway reveals both bones that have been found and those waiting to be discovered. Kids looking for facts about individual dinos may find this approach too basic, but it's a perfect choice to read aloud to children not yet ready to handle books on this topic on their own.
