Wiley, a mischievous little monster, refuses to give up as he struggles, with the help of a friend, to learn how to spell "cat." Original.

PreSchool-Grade 1?An easy-to-read story featuring a mischievous monster. Wiley has an armload of colorful block letters that he uses to spell "cat," "frog," "elephant," and "hippopota...moose." This quick succession from "cat" to "hippopotamus" does not replicate how children learn to spell, and the block letters sometimes interrupt the flow of the text. However, prereaders will see that letters spell words and that letters can make jokes, too. With just a few strokes of her pen and a little bit of color, Lewin gives the monster lots of personality. Wiley's facial expressions and body language tell far more than the text, which is written as if an adult were speaking and responding to the character's actions. A fun story, but not a first purchase.?Sharon R. Pearce, formerly at San Antonio Public Library, TX
