Synopsis

Mr. Putter and his lovely neighbor Mrs. Teaberry are close friends who share kiwis and eggplant. When Mrs. Teaberry hurts her foot and is bedridden, she asks Mr. Putter to walk her dream dog, Zeke. Mr. Putter, joined by his devoted cat Tabby, finds that Zeke is more of a nightmare than a dream. Zeke chases dogs through strange houses, wraps Mr. Putter and Tabby around trees and tugs through creeks and yards. Mr. Putter devises a plan to change Zeke's behavior and make him more co-operative.

CYNTHIA RYLANT is a Newbery Medalist and the author of many acclaimed books for young people. She's well known for her popular characters for early readers, including Mr. Putter & Tabby and Henry and Mudge. She lives near Portland, Oregon.   

ARTHUR HOWARD created the lively illustrations for all of the Mr. Putter & Tabby books and has written and illustrated several picture books of his own. He lives in New York City.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-From a neighborly distance, Zeke seems to be a "dream dog." So, when Mrs. Teaberry, his owner, hurts her foot, her friend Mr. Putter does not hesitate to volunteer to walk him. At the end of a leash, however, the little bulldog is a "nightmare." He tugs, tangles, and chases "big dogs." Mr. Putter, always accompanied by his cat, resorts to bribes of just the sort (ice cream, swimming pools, carnivals, and zoos) that tempt children to good behavior. Mr. Putter at last returns Zeke, and he and Tabby celebrate. This beginning-reader chapter book has a brief text (with a few words readers might have to stretch for), plenty of repetitive phrases, and lots of visual clues. Howard's illustrations are breezy, watercolor-and-pencil cartoons that extend the humor and give comic life to the mischievous canine, the earnest cat, and the hapless humans. Another winner from Rylant.
