Review:

"Homework is hard on parents as well as children," say the editors of this helpful handbook, designed for both adults and their stumped second- and third-graders. Using photographs of children and lively, comical, full-color illustrations, this kid-friendly guide will bring parents up to speed on new math terms and methods. Each page features a subject such as addition, then offers easy-to-follow directions for how to complete typical math homework in this subject, such as a visual example of adding two-digit numbers. Other subjects include counting coins, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding numbers (this "round-up" section circles numbers with cowboy lariats and is coupled with cowboy and cowgirl helpers!), probability, and telling time. The section on adding fractions is illustrated with delicious-looking pies and pizzas. Throughout, the book focuses on how to approach math problems, and in fact, the closing section zeroes in on problem-solving strategies. Fun, accessible, and easy-to-use, this guide should find a place on the desk of every young math student. (Ages 7 to 10)

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-3-Three titles to help students and their parents better understand the terms and concepts studied today in reading, writing, and arithmetic. The books give concrete examples of topics such as patterns, regrouping, telling time, weight and measurement, problem-solving (for math); picture and context clues, graphic organizers, inferences and conclusions, sequence, and purpose (for reading); and characters, reviews, pronouns, compounds, subjects and predicates, and purpose (for writing). Each two-page spread gives a basic and expanded definition, samples, relevant vocabulary, and occasionally ideas for assignments. Many of the examples in the reading and writing volumes are taken from popular trade books. The titles are attractive and have full-color photographs, cartoon drawings, and illustrations from the original books. The vocabulary is on the appropriate level for the intended audience, but the books encourage parents and children to work together. Accessible and helpful.
