Reviews

Grade 6-9 In this sequel to After the Bomb (Scholastic, 1985) , teenager Phillip Singer, his brother Matt, and their friend, Cara Sherman, try to locate the boys' father, who was working at the California Institute of Technology when a nuclear attack occurred. While none of the characters is memorable, what is of special note here is the description of the land and people after the bomb, plus the possible procedures one might take in locating a missing person during this type of crisis. ``Faces unnaturally sunburned,'' ``a dirty grey sky'' where ``midafternoon seemed like night'' serve as mild examples of apt description which allow readers to visualize the horrors of the aftermath. A timely story, this Soviet ``accident'' as stated by the Russian Premier could well have been retaliated by the U.S., and at the book's end, readers do not learn of the President's decision. A novel that seems to be carefully researched, and one that should have a wide readership, particularly to those who read the first book.
