Grade 2-4 A photo essay that tells the inside story of the factors involved in the precarious raising of a polar bear cub in captivity. An immensely difficult endeavor, the attempt to raise Andy Bear at the Atlanta Zoo was successful due to the work of the zookeeper who put in endless hours with the little bruin. Photographs (of which there are many, both color and black and white) were taken by that zookeeper, and show a highly photogenic cub. Text and photos work well together to document the bear's first year. The text also provides elementary-level information about bears and zoological institutions. The photos will delight animal lovers, but lack of any great depth beyond this fellow's story makes the book most useful in large libraries. Catherine Wood, Shelburne Museum, Vt.
