Grade 3-6 Val Taylor, eighth-grade future veterinarian, helps her dad out by assisting him at his clinic, Animal Inn. Amid ailing cats and pregnant rabbits, a call comes in requesting help for a champion hunter horse who has crashed a fence. Upon learning that his world champion is not lame but in fact going blind, and thus no longer a financial asset, the owner orders the horse destroyed. Val, outraged, hatches a plan to save ``The Ghost.'' Simply written and rather predictable, Pets. . . nonetheless promotes familial responsibility and love that extend to the animals around us. Val's young take-charge personality, her friend Toby, and the rest of the Taylor family should keep young animal lovers coming back for more Animal Inn entries. This lightweight series would be a nice introduction to Nancy Saxon's ``Panky'' stories (Atheneum) and Jean Doty's horse stories, such as Can I Get There By Candlelight (Macmillan, 1980).
