Reviews

Grade 6-9-- Fourteen-year-olds Eve Patterson and Phoebe Hadman are the closest of best friends. Since they met when Phoebe appeared in the middle of second grade, they have been inseparable. Only when their sharing comes to include the same boy as their first dating interest is their friendship threatened. Quent Younger takes an interest in both Eve and Phoebe. At first, they are able to remain good friends while dating him alternately, but when Phoebe feels the first stirrings of romantic attraction, seeing him with Eve becomes painful and their friendship is strained past the breaking point. When Quent decides to concentrate on Eve, Phoebe is at first crushed, but rallies to discover other friends and a new depth in herself, as well as a depth in her parents' relationship which she had never seen before. In a too-pat ending, Quent dumps Eve for a new love interest, and Eve turns to Phoebe for consolation. Their friendship is rekindled, although it shines with a subdued and subtly altered light. A slight journey of self-discovery, with plenty of "first kiss" discussions for those readers with an constant appetite for adolescent romance. --Candy Colborn, Cottonwood Creek Elementary School, Englewood, Colo.
