Details the story of a beautiful maiden whose love for a beast breaks an evil spell and transforms him back into a handsome prince

Grade 2-4 While Osborne's easy-to-read retelling certainly retains more of the gentle flow of traditional folk renditions than do the objectionable Margaret Hillert beginning to read folktales, it hardly does justice to the grace and depth required to present adequately this tale to young readers. Simplification has necessarily resulted in choppy sentences and dialogue between Beauty and the Beast which, at times, sounds ludicrous. Compare `` `You are the master,' whispered Beauty. `No, you are now in charge of my castle,' said the Beast. `I am only an ugly monster' '' with a similar line from Marianna Mayer's charming rendition (Four Winds, 1978; o.p.): `` `This palace is now yours, Beauty, and I am your slave,' the beast told her one night.'' Pels has produced a series of dark, somber paintings highly inappropriate for the beginning readers this book courts with its simplified text. Comparing Pels' illustrations with those by Mercer Mayer which accompany Marianna Mayer's retelling or those by Diane Goode (Bradbury, 1978; o.p.) leaves much to be desired. No rich colors, no intriguing detailnone of the enchantment and depth which intrigues young readers and draws them into the world of the imagination. With over 20 versions of Beauty and the Beast available, any addition should be exceptional. This one is not. Constance A. Mellon, Department of Library & Information Studies, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.

"Oh, she makes me sick!" one of her ugly sisters says of Beauty's wishnot for jewels or dresses, but for a rose. That's one of Osborne's touches that, while modern, adds wit to this version. It is Pels's artwork, however, that gives this telling its glow. The sensational pictures reveal the underlying sensitivity and poetry of the tale; luminiferous figures are carved from backgrounds of mystery and darkness. One scene intrudes: the wedding scene at the end is the equivalent of an abrupt waking from a most exquisite dream, and the text there seems flippant. But this is an effort worthy of praise. Author and artist together highlight Beauty's fidelity to both her father and the noble beast. Ages 712.
