The salvation of twins Faith and Phillip, separated and in grave danger, may lie in their ability to establish a mental link through telepathic powers

Grade 7 Up Twins are often understood to have an especially close relationship, here extended into communication via ESP. Fraternal twins Faith and Phillip have been separated after the death of their parents four months earlier. Faith is living with an aunt, an older woman who is not used to children; Phillip has gone into foster care. Both Faith and Phillip gradually grow uneasy about their situations. Phillip's foster family, members of a strict religious sect, discover his involvement in the paranormal, which they characterize as demonic possession. Faith, on her part, is coming to believe that one of her teachers is implicated in theft. Throughout, the twins communicate, both using their special powers and in the letters making up most of the book, sharing their troubles and attempting to deal with them. An interesting and believable depiction of ESP and out-of-body experiences, this is less successful as a problem novel. Almost without exception, the adult characters are unfriendly or hostile, the misery of the twins is unrelieved, the parallel stories are too neatly symmetrical, and the resolution is a little too pat. Some may be offended by the language that occasionally (although realistically) crops up. An additional purchase to meet junior high interest in ESP. Barbara Hutcheson, Greater Victoria Pub .
