Grade 5-7 When Jackie turns 13 she assumes that everything will be different and exciting. She expects to be invited to parties, buy her own clothes, and, most importantly, have a boyfriend. Unfortunately, none of these events have taken place, and a long, boring summer is looming ahead. Her 16-year-old sister, Sharon, is also none to happy with the way the summer is going. Her boyfriend is away, and her parents won't let her drive the car alone. Things change when Sharon finds a new boyfriend, on whom Jackie has a crush. The primary problem with the story is the characterization of Jackie. Her actions are much too juvenile for any self-respecting 13-year-old. Ransom does, however, accurately convey the glorious agony of a first love. Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, S.C.
