Ben's efforts to win a local photography contest are sabotaged by someone or something that keeps getting into the pictures and seems to be reaching out toward him

Grade 4-7-- Twelve-year-old Ben, an avid photographer, wants desperately to win a local photography contest, and when he meets Lily, a new girl in the neighborhood, it seems that pictures of the old house her family is renovating might be a stepping stone to success. But while his friends think Lily, an expert ice skater, is a good sport for coaching their losing ice-hockey team, Ben finds Lily odd, old-fashioned, and affected, and she finds Ben rude. Still, Ben finds himself compelled to photograph Lily, almost against his will, but there's always a flaw in the pictures, always a misty something--or someone--in the photo with her. He gradually has to admit that it might be a ghost, despite his skepticism, and his fear grows. The climax brings Ben and his sister closer together, as well as Ben and Lily, and Ben finds himself setting aside ambition in order to help someone else. This is a pleasant, unexceptional mystery; the climax lacks tension and the ghost parts are not particularly scary. The agenda for the characters' development is a little obvious, but at least they do grow; the background details of photography, ice skating, and ice hockey add depth to the story. This should travel home with eager, average readers in their stacks of weekend paperbacks. --Annette Curtis Klause, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, MD
