Grade 10-12 At Riddle University, Vermont, gifted 15-year-old Simon Storm rapidly changes from a self-described ``sociosexual island'' into a romantic hero and defender of academic freedom. Thompson embroils Simon in an outrageous plot: a secret society of power-hungry business students are using subterfuge and scandal to reorganize the university to their liking. Simon and the wacky psychology professor Grebe recognize the perpetrators and their motives just in time to thwart unjust resignations and Simon's expulsion for cheating. This tongue-in-cheek novel mocks the competitive psyche of business majors. Thompson's informal, parenthetical style works better with this zany plot than in his more suspenseful books like A Band of Angels (Scholastic, 1986) . Nevertheless, many will find the writing to be coy, sarcastic, and patronizing and the crude sexual innuendos offensive. The absurdites of ``everyday'' life at Riddle University will probably bewilder most pre-college readers. Wit is not a successful substitute for literary craftsmanship.
