PreSchool-Grade 2-- A dinosaur-obsessed boy and his amenable dog, Bones, go to the beach, the boy delivering a constant monologue about dinosaur habits en route. He builds a sand dinosaur, which magically inspires a visit from an elasmosaurus, who speaks in tongues and takes the boy and his dog to dinosaur beach. There, the friendly dinos echo human activities without the litter--playing volleyball, listening to boom boxes, and sunning their pale green bodies. The elasmo shows the boy a sand statue of boy and dog--what a coincidence! They all return to the original city beach, where of course no one believes the boy's story. This sunny and good-natured tale is illustrated with watercolor cartoon art that humorously portrays lumpy bodies, skinny legs, and city beach activity. While this not as strong as some of the recent picture books with dinosaur themes, such as Joyce's Dinosaur Bob and His Adventures with the Family Lazardo (Harper, 1988), and the boy's conversation, essentially captioning each page, lacks strong narrative flow, its cheery enthusiasm should win fans. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier

One hot summer day, a little boy (who happens to be a dinosaur enthusiast) and his dog Bones head for the seaside to cool off. There, an elasmosaurus appears and whisks the two of them away for a tour of Dinosaur Beach, a happy spot where they see such strange and wonderful sights as diplodocuses and mosasauruses sunning themselves (complete with sunglasses and beach umbrellas) and a team of tylosauruses playing volleyball against a team of coelophyses--all of them enjoying music from a boom box resting on the back of an archelon. Donnelly's ingenuous, cartoon-like characters are at home among the breezy backgrounds, full of pleasing, soft colors. A nifty glossary at the back of the book gives additional information on each dinosaur pictured, making this a must for dinosaur fanatics. Ages 6-9.
