Grade 4-6-- Shocked and upset by the news that he and his mother must move, Charlie tries to face the fact that his parents will never reunite. Although divorced, they have remained close friends--so close that they still own the house together. Now his father wants to sell the house, marry his girlfriend, and start a new life. As Charlie becomes more accepting of this move, his mother becomes increasingly emotionally distraught. Her inability to cope with the move leads to an unrealistic reconciliation with her ex-husband. Stowe's subplots outshine her main plot; they are more plausible, appealing, and humorous. In one, Charlie befriends the school bully and learns that individuals are usually more complex than they appear. In another subplot, Charlie's telephone relationship with a girl develops into a viable friendship. Stowe's first novel does have humorous moments, and the dialogue rings true.
