Eleven-year-old M.J. seeks revenge on his obnoxious stepsister by faking evidence of a poltergeist in their summer cottage, only to face the horror of what seems to be a real poltergeist.

Grade 3-6 Eleven-year-old M. J. resents his new stepsister Ashley, ``tall, lanky, and twelvegoing on obnoxious.'' When the real estate agent tells their parents that the vacation home they've rented is haunted, M. J. is inspired with a plan to show Ashley up for a coward. M. J.'s spooky pranks quickly get out of hand. Just when he's about to call the misguided project off, the ghost (apparently) strikes back, this time to Ashley's satisfaction. The strengths of this contemporary comedy are the engaging, fast-paced narrative style and M. J.'s wry observations on practically everything, including family, friends, and himself. Boys especially will identify with M. J.'s devotion to baseball and his frustration at being out-stripped by a bigger, physically more mature girl. The story is weakened by predictable characters such as the stepmother``a solid looking aerobics nut''and the batty real estate agent/local witch. Also problematical, although realistic, is the denouement in which the two children finally work togetherto deceive their parents about what really went on. At the story's end, there is some evidence that the ghost might have been real; this makes a spine tingling closing sentence, but is inconsistent with the theme of the story and leaves some doubts as to the author's purpose. As literature, this book is a lightweight, but it will be welcomed by readers in search of fast-paced, contemporary humor. Carolyn Polese, Gateway Community School, Arcata, Calif.
