Grade 5-8-- An account of Reed's 15 years spent working with the captive dolphins at Marine World/Africa USA in California. As he works in the tanks scraping algae, he becomes acquainted with the dolphins and gets to know their individual personalities. Detailed descriptions of their physical characteristics make it easy to visualize their appearances, and the pencil drawings make lively additions. Anyone who has ever watched dolphins swim and play will envy Reed's rides around the tank on the back of one of the dolphins, but not the attacks he suffers from the aggressive males. The writing is not outstanding, and otherwise interesting descriptions of human/dolphin interaction and dolphin behavior are marred by fictionalized thoughts and words attributed to the dolphins. --Frances E.
