Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 3-- Bishop's pen-and-ink and watercolor sketches modernize and add levity to the familiar story. They feature Mrs. Pig, in sunglasses and shorts, mowing the lawn while her sons loll by the pool, and a wolf who dresses in a snazzy warm-up jacket and wears a Walkman. Unfortunately, these touches of humor are not reflected in the straightforward, bare-bones retelling of the story, so that the text and pictures sometimes seem a little out of sync. Several other excellent versions have been published in the last year: James Marshall's The Three Little Pigs (Dial, 1989), which gives readers the traditional tale with witty details in both pictures and text; William Hooks' slightly different, Appalachian version, The Three Little Pigs and the Fox (Macmillan, 1989); and Jon Scieszka's The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (Viking, 1989), a wildly funny account of the story from the wolf's point of view. While Bishop's version is an adequate picture-book retelling, it pales beside the other three. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
