Grade 3-5-- Charlie, 11, can't imagine a less desirable way to spend a year than playing host to a 9-year-old genius cousin who has spent his whole life in Japan. There are lots of missed opportunities here. Little is made either of Ben's genius or his unfamiliarity with American customs. The rivalry between the boys rarely goes beyond a brief exchange of insults. Even Ben's solution to a mystery involving a will containing clues to a hidden treasure does not play fair with readers, as it relies on information not presented earlier in the story. There are some funny moments here, but the book lacks the fresh humor of Clifford's Help, I'm a Prisoner in the Library (Houghton, 1979). --Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL
