Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 3-- The quiet joys of changing seasons and the companionship of four young cousins illuminate both text and illustrations in this gentle account of visits to a grandmother's house in the country. Winter brings sleds on the snow; spring, swings on the tree; summer, lightning-bug hunts and minnow nets; and fall, jolly carved pumpkins on the porch. All seasons celebrate the beauty of country life: "boats and stars and rustling trees, with swings and fields and a fox running free." The dreamy, soft-focus watercolors in muted hues are arranged in half-, full-, and double-page spreads to give an appealing variety to the format. The rhythmic, expressive text in large, clear type is a pleasure to read aloud, as it emphasizes the significant themes of family love and respect for nature. --Patricia Pearl, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
