About the Author:
Margaret Buffie is an award-winning author of young adult books. Her books include The Watcher and Angels Turn Their Backs. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-- First Rachel McCaw's artist-mother leaves home to find herself. Then her father--former hippie-farmer, now trucker--sells their Manitoba farm and drives off in his 18-wheeler to sort things out, leaving Rachel in the care of the "Fossils"--Aunt Irene and the odd assortment of elderly characters who share her ramshackled house. Rachel has been plagued by a second sight, or what she calls The Warnings , that seems to foretell the future. The Fossils seem to understand this about Rachel, and are inordinately interested in all of her thoughts, dreams, and experiences, as if they are waiting for something to happen. Will, a teenaged neighbor and classmate who is becoming more than a friend, is also drawn into the mystery surrounding a ghost who appears in Rachel's room. Like Buffie's The Haunting of Frances Rain (Scholastic, 1989), this is a compelling story, complex in themes but fast-moving and easy to read. It features a likable but very human heroine faced with meaningful, topical family problems; an unexpected first romance; and unusual supernatural intrigue rooted in her ancestry and guaranteed to keep the pages turning. Fans of Buffie's first novel will not be disappointed in this one, with its surprising and satisfying climax and conclusion; a captivating cover and contents will attract new readers as well. --Susan L.
