Big, bad Tyrone the dinosaur wins all the games at Swamp Island by cheating until he foils his own attempt to cheat in the treasure hunt

PreSchool-Grade 1--Tyrone the Horrible (Scholastic, 1988) returns to fine tune his aggression towards Boland and the other small dinosaurs by cheating at every game while camping on Swamp Island. Even catching Tyrone in the act doesn't help, since he lies and is too big and mean to challenge. Finally Boland calls a secret meeting about a hidden treasure. Naturally Tyrone overhears and goes after the treasure himself, with some surprising results. Large, colorful illustrations of dinosaurs are sure to attract young readers, even though the creatures are given , all-too-human personalities. While ostensibly about dealing with cheaters, there are no constructive suggestions given and readers won't be convinced that a lesson has been learned by the bully. This offering proves that Tyrone is just as horrible as he was in his previous story, which was pretty horrible in its own right. --Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

The prolific Wilhelm introduced his benignly naughty dinosaur in Tyrone the Horrible , and kids who loved to hate him in that lively tale will do the same here. Boland and his dinosaur pals are not overjoyed when Tyrone tags along on a week-long camping trip to Swamp Island. Living up to his reputation as a troublemaker, the unscrupulous Tyrone cheats at every game and ends up winning all the prizes. Children will cheer when the sneaky dinosaur unsuccessfully tries to steal Boland's buried treasure and instead gets his just deserts. As always, Wilhelm knows what will tickle the funny bones of young readers; they will snicker at Tyrone's dreadful behavior, shifty eyes and caustic tongue. Ages 6-8.
