Grade 5-7 Fran Davies returns to New York City after an eventful summer spent in the household of a rich Connecticut family. She is looking forward to seventh grade, to a return to her normal family life, and especially to seeing her best friend, Sarah. Fran quickly discovers, as the title suggests, that things simply do not stay the same. Sarah has a new friend whom Fran does not like. Fran herself feels pulled between her summer friend, Andrea, and Sarah. While the theme of the changing relationships of adolescence can be tiresome, Hayes infuses it with new energy through witty and believable dialogue; a clear depiction of everyday life; and likable characters, especially Andrea, made wise and sensitive by the difficulties of her own life. Unlike so many novels of early adolescence, Hayes does not try to take on too many issues. The theme of friendship remains central while a subplot about Fran's mother's budding new career provides a nice counterpoint. Young people who liked the author's The Carousel Horse (Lodestar, 1978) will enjoy finding out about what has happened to Fran and Andrea, but it is not essential to have read the first novel to enjoy this sequel.
