Grade 7-12-- Kitty Lee is a standard teen narrator. She doesn't think she's pretty or smart or special, but it is soon obvious to readers that this self-declared too tall, too thin, blue-eyed, black curly haired young woman is not only beautiful, but also smart and gutsy; obviously, her ``problems'' are going to be resolved by novel's end. It's no surprise, then, that her friend from childhood is in love with her; that her father's depression can be sweet-talked away; that her mother's death years earlier is not the tantalizing melodrama readers are prepared for in the first 90% of the book. To give McKenna credit, anything that couldn't be fixed in the last ten pages is realistically left hanging (an alcoholic woman who neglects her children is not cured; Kitty's best friend is still eloping with an older man). The feisty heroine; the dangerous flirtation and attraction between her and a handsome married man; and her maternal caring for his troubled children combine to satisfy the romance genre requirements.
