Lewin's light-splashed watercolors majestically fill each double-page spread of this splendid book. With close to photographic clarity, the artwork adroitly sets the scene for Borden's fine portrait of a Kentucky family following its beloved 100-year-old Christmas tradition of candy-making. Young Will Bryan impatiently awaits the moment that he and his cousins will help the adults make taffy on the porch. Though concerned about his dog, Luke, who has been missing for several days, Will sings carols along with the other Bryans and tries to believe Great Gram, who tells him that Luke will return in time for Christmas. A poignant story, sparely and smoothly told. Ages 4-8.

Ages 6-9. Christmas in Kentucky is a time of tradition for Will Bryan--a time for friends and family and for making sweet candy from a family recipe. In counterpoint is Will's awareness that Great Gram sometimes calls him by the wrong name and that his favorite hunting dog, Luke, has taken off and not returned. Will's fears about Great Gram are clear yet elegantly understated, with Lewin's watercolors--gray December hills, white farm buildings, and graying fences--capturing the poignancy. The picture of Gram reassuring Will about Luke (what she says is correct, even though she calls the boy by the wrong name) projects the steadiness of love in a season filled with change.
