Reviews

Gr. 5^-8. Look beyond the title to the subtitle, which more accurately describes the contents of the book. Haskins presents a short, readable history of the Civil War and Reconstruction. More than other books on the period, the text and illustrations emphasize the roles of blacks and women. Abundantly illustrated with many reproductions of contemporary photographs, sketches, paintings, engravings, posters, and records, this attractive book opens a valuable window on the period. A chronology and a bibliography help make the volume perfect for students. Carolyn Phelan
