PreSchool-Grade 2-A book that begs to be read aloud. Five lively children make homemade music by banging on muffin tins, tapping on a coffee pot, and generally pinging their way through the kitchen. "Boom-a-boom, clink spink: there go the spoons and the big Dutch oven. They're marching like platoons." This rambunctious quintet is finally sent to the garage where, with the help of the junk pile, they create a contraption of infinite musical possibilities and call themselves the "Found Sound Band." This delightful celebration of noise, music, and rhythm fairly bounces off the pages. Rogers's jazzy watercolors harmonize perfectly with swirling text on full pages of pink, yellow, and blue backgrounds. Drawings are strategically placed at unusual angles and even upside down to reflect the exuberant play of words. This is more exciting than Peter Spier's Crash! Bang! Boom! (Doubleday, 1990) and livelier than Lyon's previous stories. Teachers, musicians, and, most of all, children are in for a real treat when these Bongos play.

Ages 3-6. Kids love uproar, but there may be just too much of it here, and it's all on one note of frenzied activity. Five brothers and sisters make music with what they can find around the house--saucepans, measuring cups, garbage cans, measuring spoons--until their desperate parents banish the music makers to the garage to build a drum set there. Rogers' wild, dancing watercolors are full of joyful energy and surprising perspective, and the simple text has lots of fun with the playful noise and the music to be found in the ordinary things around us. But there's just the one situation, and the whooping and hollering and banging need some shape. Hazel Rochman
