"The anticipation and excitement of Frankie Valdez' birthday are captured in Fran Ortiz' spirited black-and-white photographs that follow the youngster home with his family, at school, and at the festive celebration in his honor at day's end. . . . The book extends a warm invitation to share Frankie's special day, to sample his culture's traditional festivities, and to recognize the joys shared by children of all nationalities."--Booklist
"Through large black-and-white photographs and two or three lines of text per page, children meet Frankie Valdez, a Mexican-American boy living in the mission district of San Francisco. . . . The close family ties of the Hispanic family are emphasized. Spanish words are interspersed unobtrusively throughout the text, and the aura is one of warmth and closeness. . . .
