Grade 1-4-Arnosky investigates this amazing fish that always seems to captivate and frighten young readers. Different species and families are illustrated in simple drawings, and the various parts of a shark's body are labeled and explained in a basic, easy-to-read text. One spread is devoted to teeth, and those of various species are described and pictured. Students will gain an understanding of sharks, their habitats, their lives, and the way that they reproduce. An attractive, informative addition on an ever-popular topic.

K-Gr. 3. Arnosky expands his accessible All About series with a book on the ever-popular subject of sharks. The attractive acrylic paintings show the different types of sharks and various features of their anatomy while the text discusses these matters as well as shark ancestry, life cycles, and behavior. One effective set of pictures uses silhouettes to demonstrate the differences in shark families. Unlike some books on the subject, this one avoids sensationalizing sharks as predators. Even the double-page spread that mentions sharks attacking people considers why and where they come near shore and how swimmers can avoid them. The strong visual presentation and clearly written text make this a good choice for children intrigued by sharks. Carolyn Phelan
