Gr 1-3 A generally excellent book sure to delight small lovers of dinosaurs, dodos, and sabre-toothed cats. The colored pen cil illustrations are aesthetically pleasing, and the text is inviting. However, the dates given for the giant crocodile (whose scientific name is never given) in the text and ``List of Animals'' (a.k.a. Index) dis agree by 60 million years. Also, the map might lead one to believe that all croco diles in North Africa are extinct, as the word ``giant'' was omitted. Still, this will be a sure-fire hit with budding paleontolo gists, and it carries a clear note of warning to emerging ecologists. (``What? No more elephants?'')
