About the Author

Edith Newlin Chase's first picture book, The New Baby Calf, was written when she was 79 years old. With Waters she continues to share her love of language and writing with children.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Chase's poem follows a part of the water cycle, from the source of a tiny brook to a "grown-up brook" to a river and finally to the sea. The falling meter used throughout ("Slower, slower, slower flowing,/Wider, wider, wider growing") seems appropriate to the topic, yet the poem itself is rather lifeless and cliched. Broda's well-composed, vibrant paper-sculpture and watercolor illustrations enliven the presentation somewhat. Animals and interesting details crowd each double-page spread. Two old favorites, Alvin Tresselt's Rain Drop Splash (Lothrop, 1946) and Uri Shulevitz's Rain Rain Rivers (Farrar, 1969), cover this topic superbly and shine in comparison.?Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
