From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Miranda's sixth birthday turns into a fantasy adventure when her magical umbrella carries her to the land of giants and witches. She finds the giant's misplaced spectacles, rescues the witch's lost kitten, and narrowly escapes being eaten before she returns safe and sound to her own bed, just as her alarm clock goes off and the magic expires. The story is a familiar one, and the ending is hardly a surprise, but Biro's title does have charm in its humorous watercolor illustrations. The giant is fierce and the witch wicked, yet both show their softer sides as well. However, the text is wordy and does not offer the succinct prose of Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (Harper, 1988). --Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI
