Synopsis
During the twelve days of Christmas, a young black bear searches throughout the frosty landscape for gifts to shower upon his true love, in a whimsical tale populated by North American animals.

Ages 4^-7. Tyrrell, a Canadian artist who previously illustrated A Huron Carol (1992), here gives the traditional "12 Days of Christmas" song yet another interpretation, setting it in the North Woods. A pair of black bears, beautifully dressed in nineteenth-century fashion, are the courting couple, portrayed in small illustrations on each page of text. The facing page illustrates the lover's gifts, here portrayed by woodland and water animals. Although not "dressed animals," there are certain fantastic elements in their presentation: the seven swans wear golden necklaces and crowns, and the four calling birds are loons with halos. Text and artwork appear within intricately patterned borders of blue-and-white frost tracings. Tyrrell's watercolor illustrations, notable for their precise, graceful lines and elegance of form and motion, offer a fresh, new look at an old Christmas favorite. Carolyn Phelan
