Synopsis

Alec Campbell, an Australian teenager, joined the British invasion of Turkey at Gallipoli in 1915. Injuries remove him from battle, and he lived to endure the Great Depression and WWII. With both a heroic and troubled past, this proud descendent of an impoverished family rose to become a prominent labor and social activist. Both the writer's Australian vocabulary and narrator Peter Byrne's Aussie accent transport listeners to the land down under. Byrne's native style gives the word images a parochial intimacy, making his telling a more memorable experience than reading printed words. For the diverse situations, Byrne adapts with a broad range of interpretive talent. He restrains any theatrical tendencies, while allowing himself to inflect just enough color to the work.
