PreS-Gr 2-The breathtaking and often dramatic world of the Salt River wild horse is on full display in this stunning tribute for young readers. In the Tonto National Forest of Arizona, a pack of wild horses enters the scene. At times, these majestic animals appear almost tame, drinking water from a stream, eating wild grasses, or simply pausing to take in the view. Other times, readers are reminded of their truly wild nature as they gallop at high speeds or rise up on two legs, their hooves moving quickly through the air. Through magnificent full-color spreads and short, poetic phrases, Marr gives readers a what feels like you-are-there glimpse of these beautiful creatures. Descriptive and sensory language matches perfectly with the action-packed photography that is also an introduction to the environment and plant life of this region. A short note in the end serves as a plea to help these animals and provides context for sharing their story. Additional background information, as well as suggestions for how readers can help is missing; however, readers will come back time and again just to experience the horses.
