Reviews

PreS-Join The Very Hungry Caterpillar on the hunt for eggs among the cows, roosters, and lambs! It is Easter on the farm, and there are lots of colorful eggs to be found. Built on sturdy board pages, this book is especially well designed for young readers who are beginning to grow their fine motor skills. Each page includes several flaps, but only one of them is hiding an Easter egg; this design invites readers to investigate all the options, and there are surprises to be found whether the egg is present or not. Rhyming couplets form the basis of the text, and each phrase is presented in a balanced meter that is enjoyable to read aloud. Unfortunately, the subject/verb agreement is incorrect on several occasions throughout such as in, "A group of clucking hens are waking from their rest" and "A flock of fluffy sheep are playing in the sun." This is less than ideal for teaching young children about proper English usage. Despite this oversight, the text is accessible and encourages participation on every page. Built into the last line of each segment is a question asking readers to look for an egg in a certain location, which enhances readers' understanding of various levels of language as they seek and find treasures behind the myriad flaps available. Carle's iconic illustrative style is featured on every page, and families who know his other works will love recognizing familiar characters embedded within this new story. VERDICT This board book is a lovely addition to holiday collections for young readers who enjoy rhymes, farm animals, and seeking hidden objects.-Mary Lanniα(c) Copyright 2011.
