IAn impressive federation, the Alliance of Worlds consists of approximately 250 assorted civilizations, many with an extraordinary array of resources. They represent more than a quarter of the space-faring races in the galaxy. Because of its position in the universe, Alliance of Worlds faces many adversaries. Inflicting technological sabotage and arranging the murder of top officers, the crocodile-like Accadians plan to eliminate the Alliance of Worlds and other civilizations. The xenophobic Varlon also pose a threat to Alliance of Worlds as they again seek to expand. These two threats must be stopped. Recently promoted Commodore Robert Allen Sheppard is just one of the men called upon to repel this invasion in space and defend the worlds. A seasoned leader, he is ready to take on this deadly threat with his task forces at the helm of his new starship Phoenix. The first in a series of science fiction novels set in the distant future, The Phoenix Rising tells the story of a time of change for the Alliance of Worlds and its war battles with the Varlon and Accadian forces. From the Back Cover

Over the next few hours, the expanded task forces moved to within firing range. The Alliance of Worlds ships had released waves of starfighters to attempt to intercept some of the translight or warp torpedoes that were released at long range by the Varlon. The Alliance forces had a tactical disadvantage, though, as the Varlon had range advantage and could target starships at somewhat greater distances than Alliance of Worlds spacecraft. The Varlon were capable of building huge ships, and a portion of the defense advantage they had was because of their ships' greater structural size. They also had organic alloy armor that was capable of regeneration over a period of days, and multiple shield and particle screen-generating centers and multiple backup systems for weapons. The Varlon's other advantage was the chameleon field, which could alter the sensor appearance of their ships and even make computer targeting locks very difficult. Many times, starfighter pilots were forced to manually fire at what they believed was the Varlon ship, and doing so required close attack range.
