A Vice Presidential intern becomes the second pregnant woman in three days to be found nude and ravaged; her fetus stolen. Washington Star reporter Laura Wolfe, herself pregnant, is assigned to the serial killing. Her journalistic curiosity is heightened when she privately learns the intern had no boyfriend and didn't date.
This anomaly leads the tenacious reporter to question members of the Vice President's staff, but they are too scared to talk. Frustrated by this cloak of secrecy, she uses her writing to rile up speculations; who fathered the intern's baby? This disturbs many prominent people, complaints are made to the publisher. An unstoppable Laura continues collecting information that alone means little but when put together paints a picture of sexual misconduct that may include the Vice President himself.
While police and other reporters pursue a serial killer, Laura is threatened with disgrace and death. Homicide Captain Max Walsh sees separate crimes; and while pursuing a serial killer, interests the FBI in the possible sexual abuses of Federal employees that Laura has uncovered. She remains convinced a connection between the two exists, and searches for Janet's lover. Then there is a third killing, which challenges all of Laura's theories.
