Excerpt from Chapter 1: This introduction to Shakespeare's language, written both for the general reader and for the younger student, falls into three main sections. The first chapter is concerned with his artistic achievement, with the liveliness and freshness of the language that he 'made'. The second chapter speaks of the linguistic background of the Elizabethan period, of the language that Shakespeare 'found' and the use to which he turned it. Chapter III sets out in greater detail some of the difficulties in the language of his plays and poems which challenge the attention of the modern reader.
