Gr. 1^-2. This book from the Hello Reader! series creates an amusing counterpoint between words and illustrations as a boy tells about moving to his new home. With its realistic depiction of a child's feelings of sadness, fear, and anticipation, the simple text could certainly have a modern-day setting. But the illustrations reveal that this boy's home is literally his castle: he lives in medieval times (or at least fairy tale times), and he's moving from one castle to another. The illustration for "We packed all our clothing" shows a cart full of armor, shields, and helmets, and the "modern kitchen" in the boy's new home includes a large fireplace with a two-bird spit over the flames and a double crank to turn it. The occasional comedy in the well-drawn, colorful illustrations is balanced by the emotional truth of the words. Whether the boy literally lives in the Middle Ages or only dwells there in his imagination, young readers will find this an entertaining choice for independent reading, and teachers will enjoy reading it aloud to their classes.
