Led by Elliot Moose, the household stuffed toys converge on the kitchen to bake a birthday cake for their pal Lionel the lion. Lacking cooking experience, the creatures take the recipe instructions literally. Consequently, they "separate the eggs" by putting each one in a different teacup. Finally a "proper batter" takes shape. A near-disaster occurs when the cake burns, but energetic scraping and imaginative decorating result in a welcome birthday surprise. The stars here are Beck's lovingly created toys and her background art, with teacups and canisters decorated with lovely floral or fruit prints. Each animal is nicely textured, too, whether in paisley-printed cotton or plush fur. With a caveat about getting an adult to help, a birthday cake recipe appears at the book's end, inviting children to continue the adventure in the kitchen. Fans of Elliot's Emergency (1998) will eagerly grab this; they might also enjoy spending time with similarly industrious toys in Jane Hissey's Old Bear series. Ellen Mandel
