Grade 5-8-Heavenly Litebody, the Ryan family's New Age Mary Poppins, and her five charges, ages 2 to 16, are off to Italy on vacation to determine whether they like the country enough for Mrs. Ryan to accept a job there. Despite her purple spiked hair and body piercing, Heavenly is a responsible caregiver, and her mysterious ability to make things happen by tugging on her left ear benefits them all-from changing their coach tickets to first class to distracting a menacing Italian motorcycle gang. Once in Rome, Kit, the 14-year-old narrator, experiences her first romance. Predictably, the book ends with the family deciding to return to the States. Readers who are unfamiliar with the series will have difficulty sorting out the players and references to previous events. Strasser alludes to some mystery in the nanny's past that Kit and her best friend have been half-heartedly trying to solve since the series began. The cover photo seems to pitch the book to a younger audience than that intended. This mildly entertaining story (fluff/sitcom fare) may appeal to reluctant readers, but the audience is limited.
