Priests and Missions In France, many people saw New France as a land where Native Americans had to be converted to Christianity. French priests traveled across the Atlantic and into the interior of Canada to live among and preach to the Native Americans. A lot is known about the work of the priests who went to live among Native Americans and hoped to convert them to Christianity. The missionaries belonged to an order of priests known as the Jesuits. Each priest kept a detailed account of his work in New France which was sent to the Jesuit office in France. These documents, known as the Jesuit Relations, tell us a great deal about life in New France.
