Sara Swan-Miller is the author of several nonfiction books for children.
Gr. 1. This Rookie Reader performs several functions. It tells a cute story about a little girl trying to pack her bag for a trip, offers ideas about what to take on a trip (though the girl's list gets out of hand), and presents a counting lesson. The girl goes to her drawer and pulls out a jacket, a sweater, and a hat. But when she looks in the suitcase, what's there but the cat? The child keeps adding items, but whenever she turns around, the cat jumps in the suitcase. Finally, the bag is closed (with a few clothes peeking out), and the girl is ready to leave. But how can she resist inviting the cat along? New readers will find the text easy to follow, and ink-and-watercolor artwork with cartoon-style flair gives the story plenty of child appeal.
