Taken from Chapter 9: Performing arts Magical music The classical music of India has a magical sound. Its three basic parts are the raga, the tala, and the drone. The raga is a series of little melodies played over and over. Each one represents an emotion, a season or a tie of day. In all there are seventy thousand ragas! The tala is the rhythm of the music, which is either clapped or played on drums. India can be called the land of drums because there are so many different types used in Indian music. The drone is a constant tone that is usually played by a single instrument. In combination, the raga, tala and the drone create the desired mood for a musical piece.
