About the Author

Prize-winning author, Melvin Berger, believes that science should always be fun. In his books - he has written over 200! - and in his talks to young people, he stresses the excitement of science and the thrill of scientific discovery.

He also believes in a hands-on approach to science for young people. Many of his books are full of interesting, informative, and easy-to-do activities and experiments.

His great enthusiasm for science spills over into Mr. Berger’s hobby of collecting old scientific instruments. In his collection is everything from 18th century microscopes to an ancient chinese opium balance.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Two interesting and informative easy readers. The first discusses the water cycle in clear, simple language and explains such topics as evaporation, condensation, and water and sewage treatment, as well as the need to conserve this precious natural resource. The second title shows the various ways a variety of animals survive harsh winter weather. Migration and hibernation are discussed, as are other survival techniques such as hiding and changing color. This text is slightly more challenging but is concise and factual. The watercolor illustrations in both books are plentiful if undistinguished. Serviceable additions.?Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe,
