Synopsis

Nature comes in many colors. The sun is yellow, an apple is red, a feather is blue. You can find nature's colors in the most unexpected places. Sometimes you have to look closely, but color is always there. Stephen R. Swinburne invites children to have fun seeing the colors around them as they walk down the street or play in the park. A wonderful world of color is waiting for those who open their eyes.

From Booklist

Ages 3-5. Swinburne's previous books of photographs have illuminated concepts such as shapes, patterns, and opposites. Here the topic is color, a natural for his jewel-bright photos of children, animals, and plants. Clear and well composed, the sharp images make it easy for children to focus on the subjects, from the photo of a very young baseball player with a fielder's glove on one hand and a dandelion in the other to a multicolored moth resting on a leaf. The first part of the book talks about where we see colors, but the second part is a guessing game: a photo on each right-hand page is accompanied by a question, such as "What color is this apple?" that is answered on the next page. The spacious layout, generous use of white space, and irresistible photos of a multicultural crew of children make this a handsome book, while the short text and easy question-and-answer section make it a natural for reading aloud.
