Gr 5-7-A thematically rich story that handles friendship, death, and familial love in a subtle and tender manner. Since the death of her father three years ago, Rinnah Two Feathers and her mother have learned to move on with their lives, running a successful lodge in a quiet community at the edge of the Sioux reservation in South Dakota. Longing for adventure, Rinnah finds more than she can handle when she spies a suspicious stranger lurking around the abandoned Jackson house and decides to investigate. She and her friends Tommy Red Hawk and Meagan Paige set out to crack the mystery, hampered by final exams, schoolyard bullies, and a meddlesome realtor looking to buy the Circle Feather Lodge from Rinnah's mother. Their inquisitiveness leads to danger when they come face to face with a possible killer. Strong characterization, fast-paced action, and well-structured chapters make for an interesting mystery that will keep readers guessing. Rinnah is a strong, independent, and resourceful protagonist who takes pride in her Native American heritage, and the author's exploration of contemporary Native American culture is insightful and interesting.
