Do cats dream? Can they see in the dark? Are a cat s whiskers feelers? Do they really have nine lives? Patricia Lauber uses a true-or-false format to explore the questions that many cat lovers wonder about and to share fascinating details on feline history, science, legend, language, and mysteries. Rosalyn Schanzer s well-researched illustrations add to the whimsy and fun and are likely to make readers yearn for a cat of their own if they don t already have one.

Gr. 2^-4. Another book about cats? Yes. But this one is a little different. It uses 15 true-or-false questions to lead into information about cat behavior: "Cats don't like to be stared at"; "Cats have a hard time coming down trees"; "Cats have nine lives." Lauber attends to each question in a lucid, nicely detailed yet concise fashion, with Rosalyn Schanzer's colorful, lively artwork adding humorous details that help the facts slide down easily. The illustrations make this look like a picture book for younger readers, but the text is keyed to older ones. Both audiences will probably find something to keep them interested, especially if they have cats roaming around at home. Stephanie Zvirin
